World number one tennis player Jannik Sinner has been cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with two anti-doping violations earlier this season, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Tuesday.
Sinner provided a sample during the Indian Wells Masters on March 10, 2024, which tested positive for low levels of a metabolite of clostebol, according to the ITIA. Another sample taken eight days later, outside of competition, also showed low levels of the same metabolite.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the ITIA said, “An independent tribunal convened by Sport Resolutions has ruled that Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner bears No Fault or Negligence for two Anti-Doping Rule Violations under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP).”
The agency explained that the substance entered Sinner’s system due to contamination from a member of his support team. This team member had been using an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol, which is available in Italy, to treat a minor wound on their own skin. The contamination occurred during the period from March 5-13, when the support team member also provided daily massages and sports therapy to Sinner.
Although Sinner has been cleared of any intentional wrongdoing, the 23-year-old Italian will lose his results, prize money, and ranking points from the Indian Wells tournament, as required by the current anti-doping regulations.
Sinner responded to the decision in a statement on X, saying, “I will now put this challenging and deeply unfortunate period behind me. I will continue to do everything I can to ensure I comply with the ITIA’s anti-doping programme, and I have a team around me that is meticulous in their own compliance.”
