Security Council to vote on Gaza Ramadan ceasefire resolution

The U.N. Security Council is on the brink of deciding on a resolution that calls for a humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza during Ramadan, amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. However, the United States has expressed concerns, suggesting that this resolution might undermine ongoing negotiation efforts aimed at stopping the hostilities. The resolution, initiated by the council’s 10 elected members and supported by Russia and China, contrasts with a U.S.-sponsored resolution emphasizing “an immediate and sustained cease-fire,” which Russia and China vetoed. The Arab Group at the U.N. is urging all council members to support the new resolution to stop the violence and mitigate human suffering.

This potential resolution comes amid the prolonged conflict that saw Hamas’ surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7, which has led to significant casualties on both sides and a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The U.N. Security Council has previously passed resolutions addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza but has yet to call for a cease-fire.

The proposed resolution demands an immediate humanitarian cease-fire for Ramadan, leading to a sustainable and permanent cease-fire. It also calls for the release of all hostages and highlights the need to protect civilians and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid throughout Gaza. The U.S. has vetoed previous resolutions calling for a cease-fire in Gaza, citing concerns over the implications for ongoing diplomatic negotiations and Israel’s defense against Hamas, which the U.S. and many other countries recognize as a terrorist organization.

The vote on this resolution is a critical moment for the U.N. Security Council, reflecting the international community’s stance on the conflict and the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
