Anna Sawai Makes History as First Japanese Actress to Win an Emmy

Anna Sawai, star of *Shogun*, made history at the 76th Emmy Awards by becoming the first Asian actress to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Her powerful portrayal in the period drama also makes her the first Japanese actress to claim the prestigious honor in this leading category.

Sawai’s breakthrough performance as Toda Mariko, a translator for Lord Yoshii Toranaga in James Clavell’s epic *Shogun*, earned her global acclaim. When she stepped on stage to accept the award, her emotions were evident. “I was crying before my name was even called; I’m a mess today,” she admitted in her heartfelt acceptance speech.

She went on to thank the show’s creators, Rachel Kondo and Justin Mark, for giving her the “role of a lifetime.” Sawai also expressed deep gratitude to her mother, saying, “You are the reason I’m here,” and added, “You showed me stoicism, and that’s how I was able to bring Mariko to life. This is for all the women who expect nothing but continue to inspire everyone.”

Sawai, a first-time Emmy nominee, triumphed over fellow nominees Jennifer Aniston (*The Morning Show*), Carrie Coon (*The Gilded Age*), Imelda Staunton (*The Crown*), Maya Erskine (*Mr. and Mrs. Smith*), and Reese Witherspoon (*The Morning Show*).

Sawai wasn’t the only one from *Shogun* to make history. Her co-star, Hiroyuki Sanada, became the first Japanese actor to win an Emmy for Best Lead Actor in a Drama. Sanada is also only the second Asian actor to ever win in this category. In his acceptance speech, Sanada expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’m beyond honored to be among such amazing nominees. Thank you to my team, the cast, and crew of *Shogun*. This project was a dream of east meeting west with mutual respect. It showed me that when people work together, we can create miracles and build a better future.”

*Shogun* has become the most awarded show in Emmys history. At the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys held on September 7 and 8, the Japanese period drama won a record-breaking 14 trophies. At the main ceremony, it claimed three major awards, including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Drama Series, bringing its total award count to 17.
