Saudi Arabia’s Ambitious Tennis Agenda Begins with Next Gen Finals

Arij Mutabagani, President of the Saudi Tennis Federation, is elated over the successful hosting of the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, a landmark event as the first ATP-sanctioned tournament in Saudi Arabia. She views this as a historical moment, particularly significant due to Saudi Arabia’s young population, aiming to inspire them towards tennis.

The tournament, featuring top players under 21, was won by Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic, who triumphed in a thrilling five-set final against Frenchman Arthur Fils at King Abdullah Sports City’s indoor arena. The event received positive feedback from players who were proud to promote tennis in Saudi Arabia. Fils expressed his hope that it would encourage local talent to emerge in the sport.

Daniel Vallverdu, co-director of the tournament, praised the smooth execution of the event and supported the decision to start with a Next Gen tournament rather than a larger event like a Masters 1000. He emphasized the importance of continuity and the strong message sent by partnering with the ATP for this event, which aligns with the Federation’s strategy to collaborate with both ATP and WTA.

Mutabagani disclosed ongoing discussions with the WTA and aspirations to host a combined Next Gen event for both male and female players under 21. While there are ambitions to eventually host a Masters 1000 event, she believes in a gradual approach to grow tennis in Saudi Arabia and strengthen relationships with major tennis organizations.

Despite low attendance in the initial sessions, Mutabagani is optimistic about attracting larger audiences in the future, with Jeddah set to host the event until 2027. She acknowledges the need for more promotional efforts and programs to increase tennis interest.

Efforts to build a solid foundation for tennis in Saudi Arabia include grassroots initiatives and junior-level tournaments. Ammar Al-Hogbani, Saudi’s top tennis player, believes tennis passion will grow, acknowledging the challenge posed by football’s popularity but highlighting initiatives like Tennis For All, junior ITF tournaments, and participation in the Billie Jean King Cup.

The tournament’s wildcard entry, Jordanian Abdullah Shelbayh, was a standout performer, inspiring local audiences with his achievements. Vallverdu noted Shelbayh’s impact as a regional role model.

Mutabagani outlined plans to further promote tennis in Saudi Arabia, including developing more training facilities and hosting junior-level tournaments to nurture young talent. While she admits it may take time to see Saudi players in high-level tournaments, she remains optimistic and encourages dreaming big for the future of Saudi tennis.
