Salam says cabinet to soon tackle state monopoly on weapons

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has announced plans to convene the cabinet to address the consolidation of state authority throughout Lebanon and the regulation of armed groups within the nation. This initiative aligns with his commitment to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the extension of Lebanese government control over all territories and the disarmament of non-state actors.

In discussions with Deputy U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, Prime Minister Salam emphasized the necessity for Israel to withdraw from five strategic hilltops it continues to occupy in southern Lebanon. Israel justifies its presence in these areas by citing security concerns, particularly the need to monitor Hezbollah activities and prevent potential threats along the border. citeturn0search5 The Lebanese government, however, insists on a full withdrawal, viewing the continued occupation as a violation of Lebanese sovereignty.

During her visit, Envoy Ortagus reiterated the United States’ position that the Lebanese Armed Forces should assert control over all Lebanese territory, extending beyond the area south of the Litani River. She also acknowledged Lebanon’s willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue of Israel’s withdrawal from the contested hilltops.
