JK Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, is standing firm on her views regarding transgender rights, showing no signs of reconciling with Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who are vocal supporters of LGBTQ+ rights. This comes as the National Health Service (NHS) in Britain released an independent review of gender identity services for children and young people. The review, led by Dr. Hilary Cass, highlighted significant shortcomings in research and evidence supporting medical interventions for gender care.
Rowling reacted strongly to the findings, taking to social media to express her frustrations. She criticized those she accused of complicity in what she views as medical malpractice, including medical professionals, celebrities, the media, and corporations. In her posts on X, Rowling said she was “bloody angry” and challenged those who have dismissed or attacked Dr. Cass’s findings as misguided and harmful.
Further inflaming the situation, a social media user mentioned Harry Potter stars Radcliffe and Watson, suggesting they should apologize to Rowling. However, Rowling quickly dismissed the notion of forgiveness, criticizing celebrities who supported what she described as a movement that undermines women’s rights and advocates for the transitioning of minors.
Radcliffe and Watson had previously expressed their disagreement with Rowling’s views in 2020. Radcliffe on the Trevor Project’s website affirmed, “Transgender women are women,” opposing any contrary statements. Meanwhile, Watson on Twitter voiced her support for the trans community, emphasizing their right to be recognized and respected for their true selves.
Rowling’s statements underscore a deep division between her and elements of the Harry Potter cast, reflecting broader societal debates over gender identity and rights.
