According to a report, Rohit Sharma informed BCCI officials and selectors that he wants to know immediately if he is being considered for selection in the T20 World Cup team

Rohit Sharma recently inquired with BCCI top brass and selectors about his role in the upcoming T20 World Cup, to be held in the West Indies and the USA. This query was part of a comprehensive meeting in New Delhi, attended by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, Treasurer Ashish Shelar, India’s captain Rohit Sharma (via Zoom from London), head coach Rahul Dravid, and the selection committee. The meeting, focusing on Indian cricket’s future, reviewed India’s performance as runners-up in the ODI World Cup against Australia and discussed the approach towards the forthcoming T20 World Cup, just six months away.

Rohit, enjoying a break with his family after intensive cricketing schedules, asked if the BCCI envisioned him playing in the T20 World Cup and emphasized the need for clarity on his selection. According to a Dainik Jagran report, the officials, including Dravid and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, unanimously agreed that Rohit should lead the team in the T20 World Cup. Although initially considered to captain the T20I side from the South Africa tour, Rohit requested a break from the white-ball leg, leading to Suryakumar Yadav being appointed as captain for the three-match ODI series starting December 10, and KL Rahul for the ODI squad.

Rohit is set to return as captain for the two-match Test series beginning December 26. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya, who led the T20I team following the World Cup in Australia in 2022, had his role as captain unconfirmed by the BCCI. Pandya and Rohit had taken a break from T20Is to focus on the ODI World Cup. Now, with the ODI World Cup concluded, there’s anticipation for their return to T20I selection. Pandya’s recent ankle injury, sustained during the ODI World Cup and causing him to miss subsequent series, also influenced the decision to reconsider Rohit’s role.

The young Indian team, under Suryakumar Yadav, recently defeated Australia 4-1 in a T20I series, with most of that squad retained for the South Africa tour. With only six more T20Is scheduled before the World Cup, performances in the first half of the IPL are expected to be crucial for final selections.
