On Saturday, Israel’s emergency medical service reported that at least 10 people were killed in the annexed Golan Heights by rockets fired from Lebanon.
The victims were hit while on a football pitch in Majdal Shams, an Arab town where many residents still hold Syrian nationality following the area’s occupation in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency service, confirmed the deaths.
This rocket attack followed an Israeli strike that killed four Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon, prompting the Iran-backed group to retaliate with multiple rocket attacks against the Golan and northern Israel.
According to Magen David Adom, the rocket attack in Majdal Shams resulted in 10 fatalities and 19 injuries. The Israeli army attributed the attack to Hezbollah.
“The Hezbollah terrorist organization is behind the rocket launch at a soccer field in Majdal Shams,” stated the Israeli army.
However, Hezbollah denied involvement, asserting, “The Islamic Resistance has no connection to this incident,” referring to its military wing.
Police and military sources confirmed rockets had struck several locations in the Golan, including Majdal Shams. The Israeli army deployed ambulances, helicopters, and mobile intensive care units to the site.
“We arrived at a football pitch and saw destruction and objects on fire. Injured people were lying on the grass,” said paramedic Idan Avshalom in a statement from Magen David Adom. An AFP correspondent witnessed medics transporting the wounded for treatment.
Police reported, “Officers and police bomb disposal experts from the northern district police are currently securing the area and searching for additional rocket remnants to eliminate any further risk to the public.”
This incident occurred after a Lebanese security source reported that an Israeli strike had killed four Hezbollah fighters in Kfar Kila, a village in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah confirmed the deaths and launched a series of retaliatory attacks on Israeli targets, including nine within a two-hour span.
Since the Gaza war erupted last October, Hezbollah and the Israeli army have engaged in near-daily cross-border exchanges.
