Putin: Ukraine a Matter of Life and Death for Russia

President Vladimir Putin emphasized the crucial nature of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, describing it as a vital issue for Russiaโ€™s future during a broadcast on Sunday. The Russian government has often depicted the nearly two-year-long war as a crucial fight for the nationโ€™s survival, attempting to boost patriotic feelings among its citizens, many of whom are indifferent to the conflict.

In a state television interview, Putin conveyed the significance of understanding the Russian perspective on the war. โ€œWhatโ€™s happening on the Ukraine front is not just about tactical gains for them; for us, itโ€™s about our destiny, a matter of life and death,โ€ he stated.

This comment was part of Putinโ€™s response to inquiries about a two-hour interview he conducted with American talk show host Tucker Carlson, which was leveraged by the Kremlin to disseminate its views on the war. During the discussion, Putin delved into Russian history and repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of Ukraine as a state, actions that were met with criticism from Kyiv and Western countries.

Putin reflected on the complexity of his historical references in the interview with Carlson, noting the challenge it posed for Western, particularly American, audiences. He mused, โ€œThe United States has a history of around 300 years, whereas I began with the year 862. So, I presume it was somewhat difficult for American viewers to grasp.โ€
