President Vladimir Putin has declared Russia’s readiness to deploy nuclear weapons in defense of its statehood, sovereignty, or independence, expressing hope that the United States would avoid any actions leading to a nuclear conflict. This statement comes as Putin stands on the verge of securing another six-year term in the upcoming presidential election, where his victory seems inevitable.
In a recent interview with Russian state TV, Putin referred to U.S. President Joe Biden as an experienced politician aware of the risks associated with escalation. He stated his belief that a nuclear war is unlikely while asserting that Russia’s nuclear capabilities are fully operational and prepared for use if necessary.
Putin clarified that Russia would consider using nuclear weapons only if its existence or independence was at stake, consistent with the nation’s security policy. He has frequently mentioned the possibility of nuclear engagement since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, with a notable recent instance during his state-of-the-nation address, where he cautioned the West against escalating its involvement in Ukraine.
When questioned about the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine, Putin saw no necessity for such measures, maintaining confidence in Russia’s objectives there. He also issued a stark warning to Western allies, suggesting mutual absence of restraint in their dealings.
Putin indicated willingness for dialogue but insisted on retaining any territorial gains and securing concrete assurances from the West. He mentioned the recent increase in Ukrainian drone attacks within Russia as an attempt to disrupt the presidential election process, in which he anticipates a significant victory.
Following these assertions, Russian defenses reportedly intercepted 58 drones targeting various regions, with one drone striking an oil refinery in the Ryazan region, causing injuries and a fire, and another being neutralized near St. Petersburg.
Concurrently, Ukraine faced more Russian assaults, with strikes in the Donetsk and Sumy regions resulting in casualties and damages, including the rescue of a teenage girl from debris and multiple injuries from a drone attack. In Dnipropetrovsk, a missile attack escalated the death toll to four, injuring 43, including children, emphasizing the daily toll of Russian aggression as noted by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
