A video showing a priest with a machine gun slung over his shoulder inside a church in Lebanonโs Mazraat Yachouh has sparked widespread attention and controversy on social media.
The Maronite Diocese of Antelias condemned the priestโs actions, clarifying that the stunt, which was not sanctioned by the church, was part of a sermon aimed at emphasizing that โa believerโs weapon is the cross.โ
According to a statement from the diocese, the priest placed the weapon in front of the congregation and urged them to abandon all forms of violence that harm others, encouraging them to embrace the cross as the only true weaponโsymbolizing love and forgiveness.
While the diocese expressed approval of the sermonโs message, which aligns with the churchโs teachings, it distanced itself from the method used by the priest. The church issued a written warning, requesting that such actions not be repeated.
The diocese also emphasized the importance of preventing the incident from being seen through a sectarian lens and hoped it would not be used to fuel division or resentment, particularly given the current tensions in the country.
