Police disperse pro-Palestinian demo at Amsterdam Uni amid Europe-wide protests

Police in Amsterdam arrested around 125 activists during the early hours of Tuesday as they dispersed a pro-Palestinian demonstration at the University of Amsterdam. The protest, influenced by similar actions on U.S. campuses, escalated as activists demanded that Amsterdam universities sever academic ties with Israel following its military actions in Gaza after the Hamas attacks on October 7.

The operation to dismantle the camp involved significant police intervention, with officers using a mechanical digger to remove barricades and forcibly moving protesters. The demonstrators had built barricades using wooden pallets and bicycles, according to NOS, a national broadcaster. The encampment featured tents, banners, and supplies, with some paths obstructed by cobbles ripped from the streets.

Clashes occurred between two groups of activists on the site before police intervention, which was prompted by the protesters’ refusal to vacate the area despite multiple warnings. The police cited safety concerns, noting the barricades could hinder emergency services in case of an emergency, potentially trapping the demonstrators.

The police successfully cleared the site, stating that calm had been restored by Tuesday morning, though officers continued to monitor the situation. The university had not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.
