Ortagus blames Lebanon for truce breach, backs Israeli response

Following renewed tensions on the Lebanon-Israel border, U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, stated that Friday’s violation of the ceasefire originated from Lebanese territory. Speaking to Al-Arabiya TV, she reaffirmed that Israel had the right to retaliate after rockets were launched from Lebanon, prompting Israel to carry out an airstrike in Beirut’s southern suburbs — the first since the end of the war.

Hezbollah Disarmament and Lebanon’s Internal Challenges

Ortagus expressed concern over the escalating situation and reiterated Washington’s position against a broader conflict between Lebanon and Israel. She emphasized the urgent need to disarm Hezbollah, criticizing the Lebanese Army for not doing enough to curb rocket attacks aimed at Israel.

Beyond security issues, the U.S. envoy highlighted Lebanon’s need for serious economic reforms, calling on Lebanese authorities to implement measures that would restore stability and confidence in the country’s financial system. She also underlined the importance of reinforcing the ceasefire and advancing diplomatic efforts to pave the way toward long-term peace between Lebanon and Israel.
