Watch: OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Study Mode

 

OpenAI has introduced a new feature called “Study Mode” within ChatGPT, aimed at guiding students through academic content in a way that fosters learning rather than enabling shortcuts.

The tool is designed to act more like a digital tutor than a homework machine, offering step-by-step support and explanations, especially in subjects like mathematics, science, and standardized test preparation. This rollout is part of a broader initiative to address the rising concerns over the misuse of AI in educational settings.

A Tutor-Inspired Experience

Unlike traditional responses that simply deliver a direct answer, Study Mode engages users in an interactive learning process. When students access this feature from the chatbot’s tools menu, they’re met with questions about their current level of understanding and specific academic goals. The tool then walks them through concepts methodically, mirroring the approach of a classroom teacher guiding a lesson.

For instance, if a student needs help understanding Bayes’ Theorem, Study Mode won’t jump to the final answer. Instead, it first assesses what the student already knows and then builds up the explanation in digestible steps, encouraging critical thinking along the way.

OpenAI’s international education lead, Jayna Devani, explained the reasoning behind the new tool: “We don’t believe these tools should be misused. This is a step toward encouraging responsible use,” she told The Guardian, emphasizing that ChatGPT is meant to support—not replace—the learning process.

A Response to Academic Integrity Concerns

The move comes amid a surge in AI-related cheating cases. UK universities recorded nearly 7,000 confirmed incidents involving AI misuse during the 2023–2024 academic year. That equates to approximately 5.1 cases per 1,000 students—a figure that has more than tripled compared to the previous year.

In the U.S., OpenAI reports that over one-third of students in college-age demographics are using ChatGPT, and nearly a quarter of their questions pertain to homework. This growing reliance has prompted educators and tech developers alike to seek solutions that uphold academic standards while harnessing AI’s educational potential.

Going Beyond Text: Support for PDFs and Images

Study Mode also embraces visual and document-based learning. Students can upload handwritten notes, past exam papers, or even textbook images, and ChatGPT will help them work through the material. This feature broadens the tool’s utility, making it accessible to students with different learning styles and study preferences.

According to OpenAI, the development of Study Mode involved extensive collaboration with teachers, researchers, and education specialists to ensure the tool aligns with actual classroom needs.

Devani noted that while the tool offers promise, the broader issue of AI in education will require institutions to rethink traditional assessments and craft updated policies. “This is a broader industry issue,” she said, pointing to the need for clear, shared definitions of what responsible AI use looks like in academic settings.

With Study Mode, OpenAI aims to strike a balance between innovation and integrity. As schools continue to grapple with the integration of AI tools in learning environments, this new feature offers a proactive approach—supporting education while deterring misuse.
