‘Not My President’ Protests Erupt in Philadelphia, Chicago After Trump Defeats Harris

Following Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 US Presidential election, protests erupted in cities like Philadelphia and Chicago.

In Philadelphia, Sky News reported that protesters expressed concerns about issues such as women’s reproductive rights, trans rights, and gun legislation.

One protester, holding a sign reading “Fascism – Not Welcome in Philly,” shared fears over the election outcome, calling it “extremely concerning.” Another demonstrator, Isabel, stated, “I want people to understand that racism, sexism, homophobia, and fascism are not acceptable in this country. I’m upset, sad, and terrified. I think many others feel the same way.”

Philadelphia resident Cathy O’Connell voiced her disappointment, saying, “I had a shred of hope going into election night, and I believe Philadelphia strongly supported Kamala Harris, the reasonable choice.” She also questioned why Americans would support someone “focused solely on power, with no intention of sharing it with his voters.”

Data from Philadelphia’s city records showed that 528,783 residents, or 78.29% of voters, cast ballots for Kamala Harris, though this did not impact the overall national result.

In Chicago, members of the United States Palestinian Community Network protested against Trump’s win, as reported by CBS News. Hatem Abudayyeh from the Network commented, “Our issues extend to both parties… Both support Israel without question.”

Protest organizers in Chicago had previously warned that if the US continued its support for Israel amid the Gaza conflict, unrest could follow. Abudayyeh stated, “They can’t take for granted the communities and movements represented here.”

Protesters marched through the streets of Chicago, chanting phrases such as “Not My President,” “Free Palestine,” and “Fight for our freedom.” The demonstrations blocked major roads, causing significant traffic disruptions.
