The Netherlands staged a second-half comeback with a header from De Vrij and a Turkey own goal, setting up a semifinal clash against England, who earlier defeated Switzerland on penalties.
In Saturday’s second Euro 2024 quarter-final in Berlin, Samet Akaydin’s header gave Turkey a 1-0 halftime lead over the Netherlands. Akaydin scored in the 35th minute, heading in a superb cross from Arda Guler off the underside of the crossbar, sparking wild celebrations among Turkey’s supporters and coaching staff. Guler was surrounded by hugs in the coaching area, while fans in the stadium’s west end set off flares and continued cheering after the goal.
Despite pushing for an equalizer before the break, the Dutch entered the second half with renewed vigor. After missing a significant chance, they finally leveled the score in the 70th minute with a header from Inter’s Stefan de Vrij, assisted by Memphis Depay. Just six minutes later, the Netherlands took the lead when Gakpo’s tap-in attempt was deflected into the net by Turkey’s Mert Müldür for an own goal.
Turkey responded aggressively, creating several dangerous opportunities in the last ten minutes, one of which was cleared off the line. However, the Netherlands managed to hold their lead.
The Netherlands will face England in the second semifinal in Dortmund on Wednesday, while Spain will take on France in the first semifinal on Tuesday.
