Nagelsmann backs Germany to conquer pressure and Scotland in Euro 2024 opener

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann described Scotland as a formidable opponent that could exploit the pressure on the hosts in Friday’s Euro 2024 opener. However, he sees a strong sense of self-belief and a hunger for success in his team.

“Scotland may not have a roster of world stars, but that makes them dangerous. They have very agile players with a classic Scottish mentality,” Nagelsmann stated at a press conference on Thursday.

While acknowledging the pressure and tension Germany feels ahead of the tournament’s first match, Nagelsmann believes it is necessary and that the team is fully fit and prepared. “When I look into my players’ eyes, I see a lot of belief and confidence. We have the home advantage and we want to win,” he added. “We can overcome the pressure and we can beat Scotland as well.”

Germany, with four World Cup and three European Championship titles, has seen its reputation decline with several poor performances since their 2014 World Cup victory in Brazil. They were eliminated in the group stage of the following two World Cups and exited the last Euros in the round of 16.

“We will face more pressure than Scotland, and they will aim to capitalize on that,” said Nagelsmann, who became Germany’s manager in October 2023. He acknowledged that Scotland can create chances, maintain possession, and will challenge Germany’s defense in the Group A match. “We have to stay focused to avoid crosses,” he noted.

Nagelsmann expressed his emotions ahead of the match, reflecting on his journey from a small village with 700 inhabitants and more cows than people to preparing for the opening game of Euro 2024 in Munich.

Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan praised Nagelsmann for providing clarity and calm to the team. “The coach gives us confidence and a clear direction. He has discussed our roles with us, so everyone knows what is expected of them and can give their all on the pitch. This has been very helpful after the negative experiences of the last tournaments,” Gundogan said.

He emphasized the importance of winning the first game. “No other game is like the first one because it sets the momentum and euphoria for the next matches. That is why our main objective tomorrow is to win,” Gundogan concluded.
