Nadal: Return in Doha ‘Very Tight’ on Schedule

Rafael Nadal expressed uncertainty on Wednesday about his ability to compete in the upcoming tournament in Doha, following his withdrawal from the Australian Open due to a muscle tear. After spending a significant part of the previous year recovering from a hip injury incurred in Melbourne, Nadal attempted a return to competitive tennis at the Brisbane International before the Australian Open this year. Unfortunately, the 37-year-old encountered a minor muscle tear, leading to his exit from the initial Grand Slam of the season.

In an interview set to air later on La Sexta television, Nadal shared his concerns, mentioning, “It’s going to be very tight for Doha. I’ve had some discomfort these past few weeks and I’m a bit on the limit.” He highlighted the mental and physical toll each injury takes on him at this stage in his career.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his participation in Doha, Nadal showed a positive outlook towards the Indian Wells Masters, which occurs from March 6-17. The 22-time Grand Slam champion conveyed his fondness for the event and his eagerness to compete there, possibly for the last time.

Nadal, who is listed to play in the Qatar Open from February 19-24, remains hopeful but cautious about his appearance, stating that the decision to participate in Doha would likely be made at the last minute. His commitment to playing in Indian Wells seems firmer, barring any unforeseen issues.

Emphasizing his priorities, Nadal mentioned his aim to enter the clay season in optimal health, a period he has historically dominated. With an unparalleled record at the French Open, including 14 titles and a 112-3 win-loss record at Roland Garros, Nadal’s goal is to fully enjoy this segment of the tennis calendar.

Despite winning two matches in Brisbane in January after a year’s hiatus, Nadal experienced discomfort in his upper left thigh during a quarter-final defeat to Jordan Thompson, casting doubt on his immediate future on the court.
