Mean Girls Musical Dominates Box Office

Since the return of movies to theaters last year with releases like Oppenheimer and Barbie, there has been a positive trend at the global box office for most theatrically released films. The latest success story is Paramount’s Mean Girls musical, which dominated the competition by opening with $28 million at the domestic box office and achieving $32 million over the holiday weekend.

This victory of Mean Girls has delighted both audiences and theater owners. Initially planned for a release on Paramount+, the film’s excellent reviews prompted the creators to take a chance with a theatrical release. The production had a modest budget of just $36 million.

On a global scale, Mean Girls has already earned $6.5 million from 16 different territories, with additional releases planned in countries such as the UK and New Zealand, among others.

The new version of Mean Girls is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. It is based on the Broadway adaptation of the original 2004 movie. Updated for contemporary audiences, the film follows the familiar story of Cady Heron, who returns to the United States after years of homeschooling in the African jungles. In this adaptation, Angourie Rice steps into the role originally played by Lindsay Lohan as Cady.
