Ruben Amorim faced a challenging debut as Manchester United manager with his team managing only a 1-1 draw against struggling Ipswich Town on Sunday. The former Sporting Lisbon coach, who is now tasked with bringing United back to the top of English football, emphasized the need for patience before the match.
The game had barely begun at a windy Portman Road when Marcus Rashford scored from Amad Diallo’s cross, silencing the home fans. However, Ipswich, who started the day in the relegation zone, fought back and equalized through Omari Hutchinson just before halftime.
Despite opportunities for both teams in the second half, neither could secure a victory, leaving both managers frustrated. United now sit in 12th place in the Premier League, six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, while Ipswich remains in the relegation zone.
Amorim noted that his players seemed to be overthinking during the match against Kieran McKenna’s team, which led to mistakes under little pressure. Despite these issues, he praised their effort and determination. He also expressed his desire to focus more on working with his players rather than speaking to the media.
Before the match, two United fans held a sign wishing Amorim luck and urging him to restore the team to greatness. Amorim, who succeeded the sacked Erik ten Hag, made three changes to the last lineup selected by interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy and switched to a three-at-the-back formation. Rashford played as the lone central striker, supported by Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho.
United took the lead within two minutes as Diallo’s cross from the right found Rashford, who scored from close range. Amorim remained composed as his players celebrated. Christian Eriksen nearly doubled the lead shortly after, but Ipswich began to create chances of their own as the first half progressed.
Ipswich almost equalized in the 40th minute, but United goalkeeper Andre Onana made a crucial save from Liam Delap. However, they eventually drew level just before halftime when Hutchinson’s shot deflected off Noussair Mazraoui and past Onana.
In the second half, Garnacho had a chance to restore United’s lead, but Ipswich’s Arijanet Muric made a save. Onana also made a vital save from a Delap flick, and Jens Cajuste made a key defensive play to thwart Rashford after a quick counterattack.
Amorim substituted Luke Shaw and Manuel Ugarte for Jonny Evans and Casemiro, but United continued to struggle against an Ipswich side with only one Premier League win all season. Later, he brought on forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee to bolster the attack.
Fernandes narrowly missed a free-kick, and Onana saved a shot from Conor Chaplin, but neither team could break the deadlock. Amorim is United’s sixth permanent manager since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, and at 39, he is the youngest since Wilf McGuinness succeeded Matt Busby in 1969.
