Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, has assured that the upcoming verdict on the club’s alleged financial regulation breaches will not impact his players’ performance. This statement comes ahead of their home game against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
In February 2023, City faced 115 charges related to financial misconduct since the club was taken over by City Football, owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group. If found guilty, the club could face serious consequences, such as a points deduction or even relegation.
Last season, both Nottingham Forest and Everton were penalized with points deductions for violating the league’s profit and sustainability rules. However, Manchester City has denied the charges and is challenging them. An independent commission is set to review the allegations, which date back to 2009, with City prepared to accept whatever verdict is reached.
According to The Times of London, the hearing is expected to begin next month, with a decision likely to be made early next year.
“I’m glad the process is starting soon and I hope it concludes quickly for everyone’s sake,” Guardiola said during a press conference. “This is important not just for our club, but for all Premier League teams and those who are waiting for the outcome.
“I sincerely hope the independent panel will deliver a verdict soon, and whatever the decision, we will accept it, as we always have.”
Despite the ongoing legal concerns, City managed to secure a record fourth consecutive Premier League title last season, capping off a treble-winning 2022-23 campaign.
When asked if the legal proceedings would affect his team, Guardiola responded, “No, we’ve been dealing with this for three or four years now. We understand it’s part of the process, and our focus remains on the matches ahead.”
