Manchester City’s unbeaten Premier League run since last December came to an end on Saturday as Bournemouth shocked the defending champions, while Newcastle dealt a blow to Arsenal and Liverpool took advantage to claim the top spot.
City’s streak of 32 league matches without a loss, dating back to their last defeat at Aston Villa, was halted with a 2-1 loss at Bournemouth. The Cherries, who had lost 19 of their previous 21 encounters with City, pulled off a major upset that dented the champions’ title hopes. Bournemouth, who recently hindered Arsenal’s title bid with a 2-0 win, repeated their surprise against City, taking an early lead when Antoine Semenyo converted Milos Kerkez’s cross in the ninth minute. Evanilson then doubled Bournemouth’s lead in the 64th minute with another assist from Kerkez, and despite a late goal from Josko Gvardiol, City couldn’t avoid their second defeat in four days.
Meanwhile, Newcastle dealt Arsenal a 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park. Alexander Isak’s 12th-minute header from Anthony Gordon’s cross was enough to secure the win, leaving fourth-placed Arsenal with just one point from their last three games. Injuries left Mikel Arteta’s side struggling, producing only one shot on target in the match and slipping further behind in the title race.
Liverpool capitalized on their rivals’ setbacks with a late comeback to beat Brighton 2-1 at Anfield. Brighton’s Ferdi Kadioglu opened the scoring in the 14th minute, but Liverpool, who recently defeated Brighton in the League Cup, responded with Cody Gakpo’s equalizing cross in the 70th minute. Mohamed Salah then scored the winning goal two minutes later, securing Liverpool’s eighth win in 10 games and placing them two points ahead of City.
Nottingham Forest climbed to third after a 3-0 victory over a 10-man West Ham, marking their third consecutive top-flight win for the first time since 1999. Chris Wood scored in the 27th minute, and Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ola Aina added to the tally after West Ham’s Edson Alvarez was sent off just before halftime.
Elsewhere, Ipswich missed out on a rare win as Jordan Ayew’s last-second goal secured a 1-1 draw for Leicester at Portman Road. Leif Davis had put Ipswich ahead, but after Kalvin Phillips was sent off in the 77th minute, Ayew’s stoppage-time equalizer left Ipswich winless after 10 games. Southampton finally claimed their first league win of the season, with Adam Armstrong’s 85th-minute goal sealing a 1-0 victory over Everton.
