Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati recently met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock amidst the resurgence of cross-border hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel in southern Lebanon. During the meeting, Mikati emphasized Lebanon’s commitment to adhering to international resolutions to ensure lasting stability in the region. Baerbock highlighted the importance of implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Mikati also expressed the urgent need for a permanent and fair resolution to the Palestinian issue, advocating for a ceasefire and a comprehensive two-state solution.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has heightened concerns about a potential escalation between Israel and Iran-backed armed groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and others in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. This situation has led to a series of diplomatic engagements in Beirut, with Western diplomats urging for restraint and discussing possible solutions, such as negotiations regarding land borders.
In a separate meeting with U.N. peacekeeping operations chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Mikati stated Lebanon’s readiness to participate in discussions for achieving long-term stability in southern Lebanon. According to an AFP report, the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 185 deaths in Lebanon, including 140 Hezbollah fighters and more than 20 civilians, among them three journalists. In northern Israel, the conflict has claimed the lives of nine soldiers and at least four civilians.
