KL Rahul, India’s interim ODI captain, is aiming to secure his position in the Test team as India embarks on a three-match series against South Africa starting this Sunday, December 17. While currently concentrating on the ODI series, Rahul acknowledges that wicketkeeping in Tests could solidify his spot on the team. India is looking at a busy schedule in Test cricket, facing South Africa and then hosting England for a five-match series.
Discussing his role, Rahul stated, “Right now my focus is on this ODI series. Yes, I’ll be doing the same role. I’ll be wicketkeeping and batting in the middle order. After that, I would be happy to take up that role even in the Test format.” He expressed his willingness to take on whatever role the team management deems fit, emphasizing his openness to new roles and readiness to fulfill team needs.
The 31-year-old is working to establish himself in the Test lineup following his recent return to fitness. With KS Bharat not being considered and Rishabh Pant still recovering, Rahul’s prospects for a permanent spot in the Test squad are looking more promising. In the ODI World Cup, he faces competition from Ishan Kishan for the wicketkeeper-batter position, but he is prepared to compete for his place in the Playing XI.
Rahul’s current priority is the ODI series against South Africa, where he has confirmed his batting position. Despite speculations about a possible return to opening, he has clarified that he will bat in the middle order during this series. The first ODI is scheduled to be held at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, starting at 8:30 PM IST.
