Italy names strong 26-man squad, includes injury-doubt Barella

Italy’s head coach Luciano Spalletti has announced his final 26-man squad for the 2024 European Championship, with Nicolo Barella included despite his recent injury. Barella missed the recent 0-0 draw against Turkey due to a minor muscle strain, but remains a vital part of Spalletti’s plans.

Federico Gatti retains his spot in the squad after being added to the provisional lineup following the withdrawals of defenders Francesco Acerbi and Giorgio Scalvini. Ivan Provedel, however, is left out of the final squad but will continue training due to fitness concerns over Napoli’s keeper Alex Meret.

Samuele Ricci and Riccardo Orsolini are also excluded from the final list. Orsolini started in the goalless match against Turkey but did not make the cut. Conversely, his Bologna teammate Riccardo Calafiori, who debuted as a late substitute in that game, is included in the squad.

Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli, recently back from a seven-month suspension for breaching betting rules, is also included after making an appearance off the bench against Turkey.

Italy has one more warm-up game against Bosnia on Sunday before heading to Germany for the Euro 2024, where they will compete in Group B against Spain, Croatia, and Albania.
