Israeli Strikes Kill Security Agent, Wound Soldier in Lebanon

Lebanon’s health ministry reported on Monday that an Israeli strike in the southern part of the country resulted in one fatality, while the Lebanese army stated that an Israeli drone attack injured one of its soldiers in the east.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) has consistently reported Israeli actions, including airstrikes, since the ceasefire was enacted on Wednesday.

The health ministry confirmed the death of an individual in Jdeidet Marjayoun following an Israeli strike. The NNA further clarified that the victim was killed by an Israeli drone strike targeting a motorcycle in the town. The victim, identified as Mahdi Khreis, a State Security agent from the Nabatieh department, was on duty when the attack occurred.

Additionally, the Lebanese army issued a statement saying an Israeli drone struck an army bulldozer in the eastern Hermel region, injuring one soldier.

The ceasefire, which began last week, brought an end to over a year of hostilities, including two months of intense conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

As part of the ceasefire agreement, the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers are set to deploy in southern Lebanon while the Israeli military withdraws over the next 60 days. Hezbollah is also expected to move its forces north of the Litani River and dismantle its military infrastructure in the region.

Though fighting has largely ceased, Israel has carried out strikes, claiming they were necessary to address violations of the truce. On Sunday, Israel’s military said it targeted Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, citing the need to remove threats violating the ceasefire terms.

The NNA reported continued Israeli violations of the ceasefire in southern Lebanon. Israel intensified its military actions in the region in late September after Hezbollah’s cross-border exchanges with Israel, which were sparked by Hezbollah’s support for Hamas following the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel.
