The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have made an allegation regarding the use of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East’s (UNRWA) facilities in Gaza. According to a statement given to CNN on Saturday, the IDF claims these facilities were utilized for “terrorist purposes.”
This allegation emerged during an investigation into the fatal Hamas attacks that occurred on October 7, 2023. The IDF stated that they discovered evidence implicating several UNRWA employees in the attacks and suggesting that UNRWA’s facilities were used for terrorist activities.
In response to these allegations, UNRWA announced on Friday that it had terminated the contracts of the employees accused by Israel of involvement in the Hamas attacks.
The United Nations has initiated an investigation into these claims, while the United States and a number of other countries have suspended their financial support to UNRWA in light of these developments.
When questioned about the IDF’s accusations regarding the use of its facilities, UNRWA stated to CNN, “We don’t have more information on this at this stage.” The organization added that the internal oversight body of the UN is thoroughly investigating all the allegations.
