Israeli FM Katz Warns of Imminent Iranian Attack, Urges International Action

Iran has announced its intention to attack Israel, according to Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Monday, August 5.

The escalation in tensions was communicated to Katz by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who received the information from acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.

Katz called on the international community to hold Iran accountable for its aggressive actions, warning that ignoring Iran’s growing hostility could further destabilize the region. “Iran has informed us that it intends to attack Israel,” Katz stated, urging the world to “exact a price from Iran for any aggressive action it carries out.”

The likely reason behind Iran’s planned attack is to retaliate for the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, an act suspected to be carried out by Israel, though it has not officially taken responsibility. Tehran has vowed to retaliate against Israel for this assassination.

The United States has indicated that an attack could occur within the next 48 hours. President Joe Biden and his national security team are scheduled to meet to discuss the escalating situation in West Asia.

US CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla recently visited Israel to meet with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Herzl Halevi. Gallant described the visit as “a direct translation of US support for Israel into action,” highlighting the strong relationship between Israel and the United States. They discussed coordinating defense activities and expanding the international coalition against Iran’s aggressive actions and its proxies.

President Biden has also spoken with Jordan’s King Abdullah about efforts to de-escalate tensions, including negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. The White House described the call, emphasizing the unwavering US support for Jordan as a partner in promoting regional peace and security. In April, Jordan, the US, and other allies intervened to protect Israel from an Iranian attack.
