Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated on Friday that Israel is dedicated to facilitating the return of residents in the north to their homes, following their evacuation due to ongoing confrontations with Hezbollah. He indicated that a resolution is close at hand, expressing a preference for a peaceful settlement but also readiness to use military force if necessary.
During a briefing with the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Ori Gordin, commander of Israel’s northern command, emphasized the need to address the threat from Lebanon, suggesting that a diplomatic or military solution may be required. Gordin underscored that there could be no return to the conditions that existed before the October 7 clashes.
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. More than 190 people have been killed in Lebanon, including over 140 Hezbollah fighters and over 20 civilians, with three journalists among them. In northern Israel, the conflict has claimed the lives of nine soldiers and six civilians. The hostilities have also forced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border to leave their homes. Israeli authorities have expressed a strong desire to ensure the safe return of their citizens, even if it necessitates a military operation.
