Lebanese state media reported an Israeli airstrike on a residence in Baalbek, a major city in the east, on Sunday without any prior warning from the Israeli military.
According to the National News Agency, “enemy aircraft targeted a home in Baalbek’s al-Lakkis neighborhood.” The NNA had also reported an unusual Israeli strike north of Beirut in Almat, a Shiite-majority village within a predominantly Christian area.
Overnight and into Sunday morning, Israel conducted additional airstrikes on villages and areas across Lebanon’s south and east, per NNA reports. On Saturday, Israeli attacks reportedly led to the deaths of 20 people in eastern Lebanon and 13 in the south, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
Israel intensified its air operations on September 23, primarily targeting Hezbollah strongholds in eastern and southern Lebanon and areas in southern Beirut. A week later, it deployed ground troops. The escalation followed nearly a year of intermittent cross-border incidents initiated by Hezbollah in support of its ally Hamas after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that spurred the Gaza conflict.
Since the exchanges began, Lebanon’s health ministry reports that more than 3,130 people have been killed, with the majority of casualties occurring after September 23.
