On Monday, the Israeli military confirmed that it had targeted a Hezbollah command center in the Basta district of downtown Beirut during a deadly airstrike over the weekend. According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the strike was aimed at a Hezbollah facility. The Lebanese health ministry reported that the attack, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in 29 fatalities and left 67 people injured.
The airstrike hit a residential building in the working-class neighborhood of Basta al-Fawqa in central Beirut. A Lebanese security source suggested that the attack was aimed at a high-ranking Hezbollah official, but a Hezbollah lawmaker denied that any senior members were present during the strike.
The security source was uncertain about whether the targeted figure had been killed, while Hezbollah lawmaker Amin Sherri firmly rejected the claim, stating that no party officials were in the two buildings hit. He made these comments during a visit to the site, as reported by Lebanon’s National News Agency.
