Israel announced on Sunday that it had recovered the bodies of six captives in Gaza, including a young Israeli-American man whose parents had become prominent advocates for his release. The recovery took place during a military operation, with the army stating that the captives were killed shortly before Israeli forces arrived to rescue them. The news has sparked widespread anger and calls for mass protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom many blame for not securing the captives’ release through a deal with Hamas.
One of the captives, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a 23-year-old who was seized during Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, became widely known after his parents met with world leaders, including President Joe Biden, to plead for his release. The other captives recovered were also taken from the same music festival during the attack. The bodies were found in a tunnel in Rafah, Gaza, near where another captive was rescued alive last week.
Israeli military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari stated that the captives were “cruelly murdered” by Hamas terrorists just before Israeli forces reached them. Hamas, however, blamed Israel and the United States for their deaths, claiming that the captives would still be alive if Israel had accepted a cease-fire proposal that Hamas said it had agreed to in July.
The situation has intensified criticism of Netanyahu, with reports of internal conflicts within the Israeli government over the handling of the hostage situation. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has called for a reversal of a Cabinet decision prioritizing control over a strategic corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border, arguing that it hindered efforts to secure a deal for the captives’ release.
The families of the captives have called for a nationwide protest, demanding a cease-fire and the release of the remaining captives. President Joe Biden expressed his outrage and commitment to securing the release of those still held.
Goldberg-Polin’s parents had become key figures in the campaign to free the captives, meeting with global leaders and speaking at the Democratic National Convention in August. They described their son as a music and soccer enthusiast with plans to attend university. Tragically, his remains were among those found in Gaza.
The conflict, which began with Hamas’s attack on October 7, has led to widespread violence and loss of life on both sides. Israel’s retaliatory actions in Gaza have resulted in over 40,000 Palestinian deaths, according to local health officials, and have displaced millions, creating a humanitarian crisis in the region.
