Over the past few weeks, Israel has shifted its military tactics to focus on targeted killings, following more than three months of almost daily confrontations with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
This strategy change was evident on Wednesday when the Israeli army carried out bombings in several southern Lebanese border towns, including the use of white phosphorus bombs. The towns affected were Naqoura, Kfarkila, al-Labbouneh, Alma al-Shaab, and Tayr Harfa. Concurrently, Hezbollah attacked the Bayyad Blida post in northern Israel.
Hezbollah’s recent missile attack on the prominent Israeli air base at Mount Meron, their second such assault in a month, was reportedly a retaliatory response to what they described as recent assassinations in Lebanon and Syria, as well as repeated assaults on civilians and residences in southern Lebanon.
These escalating conflicts have regrettably resulted in civilian casualties alongside the intended military targets. In some instances, it appears that Israel has directly targeted journalists and civilians. Since the onset of the daily skirmishes between Hezbollah and Israel, Israeli actions have led to the deaths of at least 26 civilians. This toll includes three journalists, two rescuers, and a Lebanese soldier.
Several investigations into the strikes in southern Lebanon, particularly those resulting in journalist fatalities, suggest these were intentional and targeted attacks.
