On Saturday, the Israeli army reported conducting strikes in Syria in response to two rockets that were launched from Syria and landed in an area under Israeli control.
The army stated, “Following sirens in northern Israel, we identified two launches from Syria that landed in an open area. We are targeting the origins of these launches.”
The Israeli military, while confirming to AFP that the projectiles were rockets, did not specify their exact landing location. The Golan Heights, which Israel annexed, is considered part of Israel’s northern territory.
Recently, an Israeli airstrike targeted the vicinity of Damascus, the Syrian capital, as reported by the Syrian defense ministry and state media.
Israel generally does not comment on specific strikes in Syria. However, it has consistently expressed its determination to prevent Iran, a key supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and an adversary of Israel, from establishing a foothold in Syria.
Israel has carried out numerous air strikes in Syria since the Syrian civil war erupted in 2011. These strikes have mainly targeted Iran-supported groups, including Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, as well as Syrian military positions.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, has also led to frequent skirmishes along the Israel-Lebanon border, primarily involving the Israeli army and Hezbollah. This has escalated tensions throughout the Middle East.
These border clashes have resulted in over 150 deaths on the Lebanese side, according to AFP. Most of the deceased were Hezbollah combatants, but the count also includes more than 20 civilians and three journalists. On the Israeli side, the army reports at least four civilian and nine military fatalities.
The confrontations have mostly been confined to the border region, but Israel has warned of intensifying its military actions if Hezbollah does not retreat.
