Iran Warns U.S. Will Be Held Accountable for Any Israeli Strike on Nuclear Sites
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has formally notified the United Nations that it will hold the United States legally responsible if Israel conducts an attack on its nuclear infrastructure. The statement follows recent reports in American media suggesting that Israeli forces may be preparing for a potential strike against Iranian nuclear targets.
Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conveyed Iran’s position in an official communication to the UN, which was made public on Thursday. In the letter, Araghchi stated that Iran considers any Israeli military action against its nuclear facilities to be an act of aggression indirectly involving the United States. He asserted that if such an attack were to occur, Tehran would attribute responsibility not only to Israel but also to Washington, which Iran views as complicit due to its close strategic and military ties with the Israeli government.
Growing Regional Tensions and Diplomatic Fallout
The warning comes amid rising tensions in the region, with diplomatic efforts surrounding Iran’s nuclear program once again facing uncertainty. While Israel has not officially confirmed any plans for military action, it has long expressed concerns about Iran’s nuclear intentions and has repeatedly signaled that it would act unilaterally if it deems the program an existential threat.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes, while Western nations, led by the United States and Israel, have expressed fears that Iran could be working toward developing nuclear weapons capabilities. These concerns have been at the heart of years of negotiations, sanctions, and periodic diplomatic breakdowns.
Tehran’s latest message to the UN reflects deepening suspicion that any Israeli military move would be conducted with U.S. intelligence or logistical support. Araghchi emphasized that such coordination, whether direct or indirect, would make the United States accountable under international law for any resulting consequences, including potential retaliatory measures from Iran.
This development adds a new layer of complexity to ongoing discussions about regional security and the future of Iran’s nuclear commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which the U.S. exited in 2018. The letter also appears intended to preemptively establish a formal record of Iran’s stance in the event of military escalation.
With geopolitical tensions rising across the Middle East, particularly amid Israeli concerns over Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, the prospect of military conflict remains a significant concern for the international community. Iran’s warning to the U.S. marks a strategic effort to deter action and rally diplomatic pressure against a possible preemptive strike.
