Iran on Wednesday dismissed what it termed as “malicious” claims by U.S. media suggesting its involvement in a plot to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to CNN, U.S. authorities recently received intelligence from a “human source” indicating a possible Iranian plot against Trump, leading to increased security measures for the former president. Other U.S. media outlets also reported on the alleged plot.
CNN noted that this supposed plot was not connected to the shooting incident at a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, where Trump was wounded and a supporter was killed.
The U.S. National Security Council stated it has been “monitoring Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years,” following Tehran’s vow to avenge the 2020 killing of Qasem Soleimani, a commander of the Revolutionary Guards, in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq.
In response, Iran’s mission to the United Nations labeled the accusations as “unsubstantiated and malicious.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani emphatically denied any involvement in the recent attack on Trump. However, he reiterated Iran’s commitment to holding Trump accountable for his role in the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani.
Soleimani, who led the foreign operations wing of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, directed Iranian military activities across the Middle East. Trump ordered the drone strike that killed Soleimani near Baghdad airport.
