Inter Milan head into the new Serie A season determined to bounce back from a campaign filled with highs and lows. From moments of triumph to bitter disappointments, the Nerazzurri endured an emotional rollercoaster across multiple competitions last year. Torino, meanwhile, will look to steady themselves after an inconsistent finish and aim to push closer to the league’s top half.
Inter Milan: Lessons from a Turbulent Season
Last season, Inter competed on every front: Serie A, the Champions League, the Coppa Italia, and the Italian Supercoppa. In January, they fell short in the Supercoppa Italiana against fierce rivals AC Milan. Later, they were also knocked out of the Coppa Italia by the same opponent in the semifinals.
In the league, Inter had been locked in a tight title race with Napoli but faded at the decisive moment, allowing the Neapolitans to clinch the Scudetto late in the campaign. Their Champions League run also swung from jubilation to despair—after an epic 7-6 aggregate win over Barcelona in the semifinals, they were dismantled 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
This summer’s preparations were more encouraging, with Inter winning all three of their pre-season fixtures: a 2-1 victory over Monaco, a penalty shootout win after drawing 2-2 with Monza, and a composed 2-0 success against Olympiakos. These results suggest a squad eager to reset and prove itself once again.
Torino: Seeking Consistency
Torino finished 11th in Serie A last season with 44 points, hovering just outside the top half of the table. While respectable, their end-of-season collapse—losing four of their last five matches—showed how difficult it is for them to sustain form over a long campaign.
Pre-season offered few reassurances. Baroni’s side managed just two wins in five friendlies, falling three times and displaying the same defensive frailties that plagued them last spring. However, they did begin the competitive season on a positive note, edging Modena 1-0 in the Coppa Italia first round.
Torino’s ambition this year will be to push into the top ten and reduce their reliance on sporadic bursts of form. To do so, they’ll need consistency away from home, an area where they have struggled badly in the past.
Tactical Outlook
Inter boss Cristian Chivu is expected to line up his side in a 3-5-2, emphasizing width through wingbacks and control in midfield. Federico Dimarco, who recently recovered from a minor knock, is likely to feature and provide creativity down the left. Davide Frattesi remains a doubt, so creativity may fall on the shoulders of Kristjan Asllani and Piotr Zieliński, both capable of dictating play.
Torino coach Marco Baroni, meanwhile, could set up his team to counter Inter’s wing-based approach. Expect Nikola Vlasic to shoulder playmaking duties, while full-backs like Cristiano Biraghi may be tasked with overlapping runs to stretch Inter’s defensive line. Torino are likely to rely on set-pieces or fast breaks to trouble the Nerazzurri.
Prediction: Inter to Start Strong
Given their superior squad depth, home advantage, and strong pre-season, Inter enter as clear favorites. Torino’s record on the road is particularly alarming—they managed just two points from their last 15 away fixtures, highlighting their fragility against stronger opposition.
Prediction: Inter Milan 3:0 Torino
