Hochstein: US Actively Engaged in Resolving Lebanon-Israel Conflict

Amos Hochstein, a U.S. mediator, revealed that the United States is discreetly working towards resolving the heightened conflict between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel, marking the most severe flare-up in hostilities the region has witnessed in almost two decades.

In a discussion with Al Arabiya English, Hochstein emphasized that a broader war is not a viable solution. He outlined the U.S. efforts aimed at minimizing the conflict and seeking sustainable peace measures that would lead to an end to the fighting. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Hochstein highlighted the importance of creating conditions for safe returns of residentsโ€”Lebanese to the south and Israelis to the northโ€”underscored by genuine security guarantees, especially in the aftermath of the escalations since October 7.

Hochstein elaborated on the need for a detailed peace arrangement, necessitating mutual concessions to ensure security for both parties involved. He expressed optimism about reaching a diplomatic settlement through continued collaboration with European and Gulf allies.

Further, Hochstein pointed out the critical need for strengthening the Lebanese Armed Forces and revitalizing southern Lebanonโ€™s economy, stressing that such endeavors would require support from an international coalition, beyond just the U.S. He mentioned ongoing discussions with Gulf states regarding the orchestration of a negotiated resolution to the crisis, expressing hope for their support as efforts advance into the next stages of negotiation.
