Hezbollah released a video on Friday showcasing what appear to be underground tunnels and large missile launchers, heightening concerns about a potential full-scale conflict between the Iran-backed group and Israel.
This video release coincides with ongoing negotiations in Qatar aimed at establishing a Gaza ceasefire and increased diplomatic efforts in Lebanon to prevent a broader conflict.
The professionally produced, four-and-a-half-minute video features what seem to be Hezbollah operatives navigating through expansive, illuminated tunnels carved into rock. The footage includes motorbikes and various vehicles, such as trucks that seem to be transporting missiles within the facility, which is marked with a sign reading “Imad 4.” This name likely references top Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in a 2008 car bombing in Damascus—a death Hezbollah attributes to Israel.
Titled “Our mountains are our storehouses,” the video depicts a trapdoor opening to reveal a missile launcher pointed skyward.
Hezbollah’s leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, is heard in the video stating, “Hezbollah possesses precision and non-precision missiles, along with weaponry, that if Israel imposes a war on Lebanon, Israel will face an unexpected fate and reality.” This statement is taken from a speech Nasrallah gave in 2018.
Since the start of the Gaza conflict, triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, Hezbollah has been engaging in near-daily exchanges of fire with the Israeli military in support of Hamas. The recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and an Israeli strike that killed a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon have escalated tensions, prompting diplomatic efforts to prevent the situation from spiraling into a wider war, especially after Iran and Hezbollah vowed retaliation.
Nasrallah’s further remarks in the video, subtitled in English and Hebrew, assert that Hezbollah’s missiles are strategically positioned and ready to strike at predetermined targets in Israel.
Hezbollah’s arsenal, manpower, experience, and resolve, Nasrallah says, are stronger than ever.
Since the last full-scale war with Israel in 2006, Hezbollah has significantly upgraded its military capabilities, acquiring a diverse array of unguided heavy artillery rockets, ballistic missiles, and various anti-aircraft, anti-tank, and anti-ship missiles. The group is also believed to have developed an extensive network of underground tunnels in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border.
Imad Mughniyeh, whom the video references, is credited with advancing Hezbollah’s military capabilities and is regarded as the architect of the group’s “victory” over Israel in 2006.
