Hamas Ready to Launch Gaza Ceasefire Talks Immediately

Hamas has expressed readiness to engage in immediate negotiations concerning a U.S.-backed proposal for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, aiming to halt the ongoing conflict that began in October 2023. This development precedes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled visit to Washington, where discussions with President Donald Trump are expected to focus on the ceasefire initiative.

The proposed ceasefire framework, facilitated by mediators from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, outlines a phased approach to de-escalation. Key elements include the release of 10 living Israeli hostages and the remains of 18 others held by Hamas, in exchange for an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel. Additionally, the plan calls for a partial withdrawal of Israeli military forces from designated areas in Gaza and the facilitation of humanitarian aid delivery to the affected population.

Hamas has indicated a positive stance toward the proposal, emphasizing the need for guarantees that the ceasefire would lead to a permanent cessation of hostilities. The group seeks assurances that Israel will not resume military operations once hostages are released. In response, President Trump has conveyed optimism about reaching an agreement, noting Israel’s acceptance of the terms and urging Hamas to reciprocate.

The conflict, which commenced with a Hamas-led attack on Israel resulting in over 1,200 deaths, has led to significant casualties and humanitarian concerns in Gaza. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 57,000 Palestinians have been killed since the onset of hostilities. Recent Israeli military operations have intensified, with reports of airstrikes targeting various locations across the Gaza Strip, including areas near Khan Yunis and Rafah. These strikes have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, including individuals seeking aid and shelter.
