George RR Martin, the creative mind behind HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” has shared updates on upcoming projects related to the series.
In a blog post, the 75-year-old author commended Netflix’s animated series “Blue Eye Samurai,” encouraging fans of his work to watch it for its exceptional quality. He then revealed his involvement in developing animated series set in the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe.
Martin noted that while none of the HBO animated projects have received official approval yet, they are nearing a critical phase in their development. Variety reported in 2021 about one such animated series in the works, and Martin confirmed that he had pitched four such series to HBO, though two were eventually set aside.
One of the remaining projects, “Nine Voyages,” originally planned as a live-action series, has now shifted to animation, a move Martin fully supports. He cited budgetary issues, particularly the high cost of filming at sea, as a reason for this transition.
Martin acknowledged the uncertainty of these projects reaching the screen but remained hopeful that they could match the quality of “Blue Eye Samurai.”
Fans are also anticipating the second season of “House of the Dragon,” based on Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” which delves into the history of House Targaryen, set 200 years before “Game of Thrones.” The release date for season two remains unannounced.
The cast for the upcoming season includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.
