Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had discussions with U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein on Tuesday, following Hochstein’s efforts in Lebanon to mediate the ongoing conflict along the Israel-Hezbollah border.
Gallant expressed Israel’s dedication to finding a political solution but highlighted that Hezbollah’s aggressive actions were pushing Israel towards considering military options in Lebanon. He communicated this stance during Hochstein’s mission, aimed at resolving nearly five months of escalating conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
Hochstein, on his part, emphasized the necessity of a diplomatic approach to halt the hostilities during his visit to Beirut on Monday. He advocated for a comprehensive and fair security agreement between Lebanon and Israel, stating that merely a temporary ceasefire would not suffice to end the ongoing violence.
After meeting Nabih Berri, a supporter of Hezbollah, Hochstein cautioned that a limited conflict could not be easily managed and stressed the need for changes in security measures along the Blue Line. This demarcation was established by the UN in 2000 following the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.
The conflict has resulted in the displacement of thousands from both Lebanon and Israel, with casualties including at least 299 individuals in Lebanon, primarily Hezbollah militants and 49 civilians, and the deaths of 10 Israeli soldiers and seven civilians. Israel has consistently signaled the possibility of initiating a military operation against Hezbollah to secure the border region and ensure the safety of its northern residents.
