First Emirati Planes Touch Down in Beirut After Travel Ban Lifted

The United Arab Emirates has officially lifted its travel ban on Lebanon, allowing Emirati citizens to visit the country starting May 7, 2025. This decision follows a meeting between UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Abu Dhabi, where both leaders agreed to restore travel links and enhance bilateral relations.

Resumption of Travel and Mandatory Procedures

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Emirati nationals intending to travel to Lebanon must register with the โ€œTwajudiโ€ service before departure. This registration is mandatory for all travelers, including those transiting through third countries. Travelers are required to provide their intended address in Lebanon, emergency contact details, and the purpose of their visit. Any changes to this information must be promptly updated. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in legal consequences.

Diplomatic Context and Regional Implications

The travel ban was initially imposed in 2021 amid a diplomatic dispute, during which the UAE withdrew its diplomats from Beirut in solidarity with Saudi Arabia. This move was in response to criticisms from a Lebanese minister regarding the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen. While Lebanese citizens were not banned from entering the UAE, they faced challenges in obtaining visas.

The recent decision to lift the ban is part of broader efforts to mend ties between Lebanon and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. In March 2025, Saudi Arabia indicated a review of obstacles to resuming Lebanese imports and lifting its own travel restrictions. The UAEโ€™s move is seen as a significant step in this regional rapprochement.

Lebanese Governmentโ€™s Response

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam welcomed the UAEโ€™s decision, highlighting it as a reflection of the strong fraternal relations between the two nations. He expressed gratitude to President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and emphasized Lebanonโ€™s readiness to welcome Emirati and other Gulf visitors. The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also acknowledged the importance of this development in strengthening bilateral ties and fostering collaboration.

Future Prospects and Economic Impact

The lifting of the travel ban is expected to have positive implications for Lebanonโ€™s tourism sector, which has historically relied on visitors from Gulf countries. Additionally, discussions are underway to establish a joint UAE-Lebanon Business Council and explore cooperative projects in governance and development. The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development plans to send a delegation to Lebanon to assess potential joint initiatives.
