Everton FC has been penalized with a two-point deduction for failing to comply with the Premier Leagueโs Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which has resulted in the team moving perilously close to the relegation zone. This penalty marks the second time this season that Everton has faced a deduction, with an earlier 10-point penalty being reduced to six points upon appeal.
Before this deduction, Everton was positioned 15th in the league standings, maintaining a four-point gap from the relegation zone. Now, after the penalty, they have fallen to 16th place, holding 27 points and standing only two points clear of Luton Town in 18th position.
The Premier League issued a statement confirming that Everton had been docked two points immediately for not adhering to the PSR for the fiscal period concluding in the 2022/23 season.
The rules stipulate that clubs can only incur losses up to $132.8 million (ยฃ105 million) across three years. However, an independent commission discovered that Everton had exceeded this limit by $21 million (ยฃ16.6 million) for the three-year window ending in the 2022-23 season.
Initially, the commission considered a five-point deduction but reduced it to two points due to several mitigating factors presented by Everton. The club highlighted previous penalties for overlapping seasons, loss of sponsorship from USM Services due to geopolitical factors, and their immediate admission to the breach as reasons for a more lenient deduction.
Everton plans to contest this latest sanction, arguing that the current loss threshold does not reflect the economic realities of modern football, including inflation in wages and transfer fees.
The club expressed a commitment to cooperate with the league on PSR matters but voiced concerns over the inconsistency in points deductions by various commissions. Meanwhile, the Premier League has plans to update these rules later in the year, although changes might not be timely enough to impact Evertonโs situation in the top division.
