The European Union announced on Thursday that it is providing an additional 30 million euros ($33 million) in humanitarian aid to Lebanon amid ongoing conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated, “Today, we are stepping up our humanitarian aid to the people of Lebanon. Our new funding will ensure civilians receive much-needed assistance during this very difficult time. I am extremely concerned by the constant escalation of tensions in the Middle East. All parties must do their utmost to protect the lives of innocent civilians.”
This recent commitment increases the EU’s total humanitarian support for Lebanon this year to over 100 million euros, following a 10 million euro allocation announced earlier in the week.
Meanwhile, Israel has intensified its military actions in Lebanon, including a bombing campaign and deploying troops across the border. These actions have resulted in over 1,900 deaths, including the killing of Hezbollah’s long-standing leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike.
According to Lebanese authorities, the ongoing strikes have displaced approximately one million people.
