A stunning evening dress once donned by Princess Diana achieved an extraordinary sale price of $1.1 million at an auction, far exceeding its estimated value and setting a new record for the highest auction price for one of her dresses. This record-breaking sale was announced by Julien’s Auctions, a Los Angeles-based auction house.
The dress, a black and blue ballerina-length creation by designer Jacques Azagury, was first worn by Diana in 1985 during a visit to Florence. She was also seen wearing it in Vancouver a year later, as noted by the auction house.
With an initial estimated value between $100,000 and $200,000, the dress, accompanied by a matching illustration, ultimately sold for $1,148,080. Julien’s Auctions proudly stated that this sale now holds the world record for the highest price fetched by a dress worn by Princess Diana at an auction, surpassing the previous record of $604,800.
The gown is distinguished by its long black velvet bodice, embellished with blue stars, and a two-tier blue organza skirt, complete with a sash and bow.
This dress was part of Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM)’s “Hollywood Legends” sale, a four-day event featuring various iconic memorabilia.
Additionally, a pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana for her 1981 engagement portrait with Prince Charles, photographed by Lord Snowdon, was auctioned for $381,000. This blouse, crafted by David and Elizabeth Emanuel who also designed Diana’s wedding dress, was estimated to sell for between $80,000 and $100,000.
