Novak Djokovic two wins from ending 2024 drought after reaching Geneva Open semifinals

Novak Djokovic moved closer to ending his 2024 title drought by defeating Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-1 on Thursday, securing a spot in the Geneva Open semi-finals. The world number one, who accepted a late wildcard to participate in the ATP 250 tournament before defending his French Open title, faced a challenging moment in the 10th game. Down 0-40, Djokovic saved four set points and broke Griekspoor to take a 6-5 lead, subsequently serving out the first set.

The 37-year-old Serbian maintained his momentum, breaking serve three times in the second set, which lasted only 25 minutes, ultimately overcoming the world number 27. โ€œIt was a great win. The first set could have easily gone his way as he played better for most of it,โ€ said Djokovic, who has been stuck on 98 singles titles since winning last yearโ€™s ATP Finals.

โ€œHe had three set points at 5-4, and I was 0-40 down. The match could have taken a completely different direction if he had converted those set points. I was fortunate to find some excellent serves and played solid tennis from that point onwards. The second set was really good. I appreciate everyoneโ€™s support on this cold day.โ€

The 24-time Grand Slam champion will face Czech player Tomas Machac in the semi-finals on Friday.
