Young gun Coco Gauff takes down another American in Stuttgart WTA showdown

Coco Gauff, the third seed, secured a hard-fought victory over Sachia Vickery with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in an all-American matchup during the second round at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. Gauff rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the final set and overcame 15 double faults to maintain her strong record against fellow Americans, with Jessica Pegula being the only American to defeat her since Sofia Kenin at Wimbledon in 2023.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals was Belarus’s second seed Aryna Sabalenka, who was leading her match against Spain’s Paula Badosa 7-6 (4), 4-6, 3-3 when Badosa retired due to a left thigh injury. In other first-round matches, seventh-seeded Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu, Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, and Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk all moved forward.

At the Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole in France, fifth seed Mirra Andreeva from Russia and the sixth-seeded American Sloane Stephens both avoided potential upsets. Andreeva overcame fellow Russian Elina Avanesyan 7-5, 6-4, and Stephens defeated Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-2. Additional victories were recorded by Italy’s Martina Trevisan, Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Poland’s Magda Linette, and Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse, all winning in straight sets.

The day’s only three-set match saw France’s Varvara Gracheva overcoming Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
