Manchester City made history on Sunday, May 19, by securing their fourth consecutive English Premier League (EPL) title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over West Ham. This latest triumph means City has surpassed their arch-rivals Manchester United in consecutive EPL titles, becoming the first team to achieve this feat.
Despite a 2-1 victory against Everton, Arsenal finished second in the league. The Gunners had led the standings for most of the season until City overtook them with a 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur last week.
For Arsenal to clinch the title, they needed to win their final league game while hoping City would lose against West Ham. However, City started their match with aggressive intent.
Phil Foden, recently awarded the Premier League Player of the Season, scored the opening goal for City in just the second minute. He doubled the lead in the 18th minute, putting City 2-0 ahead. West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus pulled one back in the 42nd minute, but City led 2-1 at halftime.
Rodri extended City’s lead in the 59th minute, virtually sealing the game.
Meanwhile, Arsenal struggled to keep pace with Everton, who took the lead in the 40th minute through Idrissa Gueye. Arsenal quickly responded, with Takehiro Tomiyasu equalizing in the 43rd minute. Kai Havertz scored the winning goal for Arsenal in the 89th minute, but it wasn’t enough to secure the title. Arsenal finished the season with 89 points, just two points behind City’s 91.
In the end, City’s dominance and consistent performance throughout the season earned them a well-deserved place in the history books.
