Chelsea have bolstered their defensive ranks with the acquisition of highly rated Netherlands international Jorrel Hato from Ajax. The 19-year-old joins the West London club in a deal reportedly valued at £37 million ($49 million), becoming the latest addition in an ambitious summer transfer window.
Hato has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, committing his long-term future to the Premier League side as they prepare for a demanding season competing on both domestic and European fronts.
Rising Dutch Talent Aims to Make Impact in England
Speaking after the move was confirmed on Sunday, Hato expressed his excitement at joining Chelsea. “I’m thrilled to be here,” he said. “After thinking carefully about my future, I felt ready to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the perfect place for that, and I’m really happy with my decision.”
Primarily a central defender but also comfortable playing at left-back, Hato is known for his composure on the ball and tactical awareness—qualities that have already earned him six caps for the Netherlands senior team. He made his international debut in 2023, coming off the bench in a match against Gibraltar.
From Ajax Academy to Premier League Ambitions
Hato began his football journey at Sparta Rotterdam before joining Ajax’s esteemed youth academy in 2018. He signed his first professional contract with the Amsterdam club at just 16 and went on to make 111 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals during that time.
Chelsea’s interest in the young defender reflects their ongoing focus on recruiting top-tier prospects with long-term potential. Hato becomes the club’s eighth signing since the end of last season, joining a group of youthful talents brought in under new head coach Enzo Maresca.
The Blues had already secured the services of Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, Estevao Willian, and Kendry Paez before finalizing Hato’s transfer.
Looking Ahead to the New Season
Chelsea, who claimed the FIFA Club World Cup title in recent years, will kick off their 2025–26 Premier League campaign at Stamford Bridge against Crystal Palace on August 17. With Hato now part of a reshaped squad, the Blues are looking to make a strong statement as they juggle both league and Champions League aspirations.
The club’s investment in youth and versatility signals a clear intent: building a squad not just for the season ahead, but for sustained success in the years to come.
